| Aliso Viejo: is located in Orange County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, Aliso Viejo population was 40,166. Aliso Viejo became Orange County's 34th city on July 1, 2001, and has been the only city in Orange County to incorporate since 2000. It borders the cities of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, and Laguna Woods. Aliso Viejo is a lively community with award-winning
schools, a convenient location, great shopping, dining and entertainment,
employment centers, beautiful parks and an extensive recreational
program offered by the Aliso Viejo Community Association (AVCA).
With its expanding housing and work options, educational centers,
balanced retail/commercial mix, and recreational opportunities,
Aliso Viejo continues to offer more reasons for businesses and families
to choose Aliso Viejo as their hometown. |

the CDP has a total area of 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²), all land. |

Aliso Viejo had been an unincorporated community since around 1990, when it became Orange County's 34th City on July 1, 2001. The first planned community in Orange County, it was targeted to middle and upper-middle income homebuyers. Aliso Viejo had only 7,600 residents in 1990. Developers were building homes, condos and apartments so fast that there were waiting lists and lotteries held for singles and couples anxious to be a part of the community. By 2000, the population expanded by 32,000 residents, making it the top city in population growth in Orange County. Aliso Viejo became a City mainly in response to Aliso Viejo's Cityhood 2000 committee, which was responsible for introducing an initiative onto the ballot for the City's 2001 special election. Voters passed the initiative, making Aliso Viejo officially a City, with a whopping 93.3% in favor. The Committee was created by the City's first Mayor, Carmen Vali-Cave, who was the Committee' co-founder and president. Aliso Viejo was originally part of the 22,000 acre Moulton Ranch. The Moulton family took title in the 1890's to land originally granted to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842. In 1976, Mission Viejo Company purchased the last 6,600 acres for a new planned community that is now part of the City of Aliso Viejo. The first residential units were offered in March of 1982 and the first residents arrived in November of the same year. |
