A 45 Year Tradition of Outrigger Canoe Racing in Dana Point

When: Saturday, August 8th, 2017

Where: Doheny State Beach

The Whitey Harrison Classic was established in 1971 as part of the Dana Point Harbor opening ceremonies. Today, It’s one of Southern California’s most popular outrigger canoe racing events with over 800 athletes competing on a 20 mile course from Doheny State Beach to Laguna Main Beach and back.

This is the first of the nine-man outrigger canoe races of the Southern California Outrigger Racing Association, hosted by the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club.  These are exciting races with 6 paddlers in the canoe and 3 more on a support boat who swap out during the race with the canoe keeping a steady pace.  Vendors and displays will be on the lawn in the park, along with tents for each racing club.
