Swarms of butterflies are invading inland sections of Southern California as a result of an unusually heavy migration of a common species making its way from Mexico to the Pacific Northwest to breed, experts say.

About 1 billion butterflies, known as Painted Ladies, are flying at speeds of 20 miles per hour in a northerly direction from the deserts of Mexico to reach breeding grounds in Oregon, according to several sources in different newspapers.  

Here in Orange County we are seeing this magnificent phenomenon - and if you were wondering what was happening - well, that's that. The volume this year is definitely unusual - with many of us experiencing these swarms of butterflies these past days.

Are you ready? The 61st Annual Swallows Day Parade ( Fiesta de las Golondrinas) is coming back in a few days! This is the nation's largest non-motorized parade. It is totally organized and presented by the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association. Arrive early; most street closures are by 10.00 a.m. The parade begins promptly at 11 am. The Mercado is a Street Fair and Market Place where you can eat, drink, and shop at over 100 booths. It is THE place to be after the parade! Listen and dance to the music of The Working Cowboy Band, a traditional country music band.

Back again this year, a tradition of 48 years! The Dana Point Festival of whales is a two fun-filled weekends, March 2 & 3 and 9 & 10, 2019 . The Festival is free to attend and there are several different activities that have different costs throughout both weekends.
