This year is quickly drawing to a close, and as the christmas shopping winds down, thoughts turn to how to end the old year and welcomne the new. Kids are out of school and you may be looking for acitivities to keep those busy heads, well, busy. First, let me go through some events happening this weekend that are kid friendly, great for families and if you are looking for some christmas spirit.
Friday December 16th:
The Nutcracker: Celebrate the beauty and pageantry of the holidays with Festival Ballet Theatre Company's annual production of The Nutcracker. Friday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Dr., Irvine. Price: $40 adult, $37 senior, $35 child.
A Christmas Carol: Come see this timeless Christmas classic with all your favorite Dickens characters. Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 12 and 4 p.m. at South Coast Repertory, 655 Town Center Dr., Costa Mesa. Price: Varies; no children under 6.
Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade: Festivities start this weekend! Come and see this great show of lights.
Dana Point Christmas Boat Parade: the boats are out this weekend ( started last weekend). Dress warm, show can be seen pretty much from anywhere around the harbor. Starts at 7:30pm.
Huntington Harbor Cruise of Lights Boat Tour: See the 49th Annual Huntington Harbor Cruise of Lights Boat Tour - Proceeds
benefit the Philharmonic Society's music outreach program for children. Starts at 6:30pm.
Saturday December 17th:
The Nutcracker, A Magical Journey: A magical holiday treat with Maple Youth Ballet and Aaron Smyth from ABT.
Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 & 7 p.m at Northwood High School Performing Arts Theatre, 4515 Portlola Pkwy, Irvine. Price: $22-$30.
Frosty Flicks: Bring blankets and enjoy free popcorn and a family friendly holiday movie on
an outdoor big screen. Saturday Dec. 17, "Home Alone" and Sunday, Dec. 18, "It's a Wonderful Life" at 6:30 p.m. at The LAB Anti-Mall, 2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa. Free.
Pet Photos with Santa: Bring your pet for a photo with Santa. Saturday, Dec. 17 from 12-3 p.m. at The Strand, 155 Fifth St., Huntington Beach.
Sunday Decemeber 18th
Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train: Take  a train through Irvine Regional Park to meet and have your pictureÂ
taken with Santa Claus. Christmas Train is open from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Dec. 15-16, and from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 19 through 23. Irvine Park Railroad, One Irvine Park Rd., Orange.
Santa's Village and the North Pole: Enjoy a variety of imaginative craft activities available at Santa'a Village.
Sunday, Dec. 18 beginning at 10 a.m. at Macy's South Coast Plaza in Carousel Court (North Pole is in Macy's Home Store), 333 Bristol St.,
Costa Mesa. Prices vary per craft.
Santa's Workshop: Santa Claus will visit his workshop along with Mrs. Claus and the
elves. Sunday, December 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Mission Viejo Civic Center Park, 200 Civic Center, Mission Viejo. Free.
